PERA mailed our 1099R forms on Friday, January 29, 2010 to all PERA retirees, beneficiaries and those members who received refunds in 2009. If you do not receive your 1099R form by February 12, 2010, please contact PERA at 1-800-342-3422 to request a reprint. PERA cannot reprint 1099R forms prior to February 12, 2010.
For the 1099R forms issued on January 29, 2010, PERA participated in a pilot program with IRS to test truncation of SSNs/TINs. This means only the last four digits of the SSN/TIN will show on your 1099R form. The truncation is only on Copy B, which the Payee will attach to his or her tax return and Copy C, which the Payee retains for their records. Copy A, which is filed with the IRS by PERA will show the full SSN/TIN. The reason for this change was to protect the identity of PERA retirees, beneficiaries and refund recipients who receive this information in the mail. For further information concerning this pilot program go to, http://www/irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-09-93.pdf.

Dear PERA Members,
This has been an extraordinary year in the financial world as the market decline began last November. The question has been asked many times of the Board, did you see it coming. While no one could have predicted the fall of our US economy, the year was compared with the "Great Depression" of the 30's. This decline has caused our unemployment rates to skyrocket out of control. The PERA fund high was at $13.4 Billion, and as a result of the market downturn to $7.8 Billion; however the Fund is now back at $10.5 Billion. (continued...) (Posted 12/30/2009)
PERA has received several inquiries regarding the new Normal Retirement Age regulation proposed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The IRS recently postponed the effective date of the proposed regulation to allow further review. Consequently, the regulation will not be effective for governmental pension plans until January 1, 2011 (continued...). (Posted 10/22/2008)
